…From the San Francisco Examiner:
San Francisco’s Coit Tower has always been a monument to the bravery of San Francisco firefighters. It was erected by Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a wealthy socialite who liked to chase fires herself, or so the story goes.
But for the next four nights (until June 10), the tower atop Telegraph Hill takes on a special meaning for the Fire Department. The City plans to light it up the color red in honor of firefighter-paramedic Anthony “Tony” Valerio and Lt. Vince Perez, who died from injuries sustained fighting a blaze Thursday morning in the Diamond Heights district of San Francisco.
“Coit Tower and its storied history with the San Francisco Fire Department is a fitting location to offer a tribute to honor both Lieutenant Vincent Perez and firefighter Anthony Valerio, two firefighters who dedicated their lives to protecting the people of San Francisco,” Mayor Ed Lee said in a statement.
